RGL Makerspace

Makerspace Mission and Philosophy

The RGL Makerspace exists within, and as a part of, the Middle School Library.  It shares with the Library the aim of providing a safe and nurturing “third space” where students may experiment and explore, free of judgment. The goal of the Makerspace is to nurture possibility.  We aim to provide a space, both physical and mental, where students are allowed to slow down, think differently, experiment, and find joy in creating their own objects that can and should exist, in a tangible way, in the world.

At the RGL Makerspace, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to explore tools and materials, practice creativity, and develop critical thinking skills in an environment that fosters collaboration and innovation.  Students have the autonomy to design and create their own objects and artifacts.  Prototyping and iteration are encouraged.  The Library maintains the makerspace, but the students take ownership of it.  Students are expected to share what they’ve learned with others and act as advocates and mentors.  The focus of the Makerspace changes as the students change, and the space is designed to be flexible and dynamic.

Faculty are encouraged to utilize the Makerspace with their students for classwork and project work.   Students utilize the space for both school work and their own creative pursuits.
