So why use this LibGuide?

You're asking some great questions in this research on early modern Japan, but a great question is almost always complex. This means you're going to be researching in a variety of materials. The purpose of this guide is to make suggestions, to open some new possibilities for you in finding information.

Each student will complete a thesis-based research paper on one of the following questions:

  • Who were the samurai and what role did they play in the time of the Three Unifiers? What made them powerful and how did they lose their power?
  • How did Zen Buddhism influence Japanese cultural forms like haiku, rock/sand temple gardens, the tea ceremony, painting, etc.?
  • How did Ieyasu rise to power and then consolidate his power during the early Tokugawa period?
