Maddie is one of two protagonists in Elizabeth Wein's WWII novel Code Name Verity. In the book, Wein describes a pair of mittens Maddie wears and has written about the pattern she was inspired by here. The pattern was originally published in a 1940s leaflet, Essentials for the Forces, published by Jaeger Hand-knit. I am knitting my own pair!
